Ponca City Main Street Sited as
Outstanding Program in 2007

“Ponca City Main Street has an excellent reputation across the state as one of our most outstanding programs, said Alice Johnson, Oklahoma Main Street Center state staff liason. Ponca City’s program is used as a catalyst and example for other programs to get started.”

Ponca City Main Street began in 1987 and has been going strong ever since. During a recent end of the year assessment done by the state office it was noted that the local program ranks in the top 10% of Main Street programs across the state in terms of activities, projects, grant funding opportunities and membership.

The state assessment finished in June of 2007 considered all four components of the program, i.e. Organization, Promotions, Design and Economic Restructuring. Each of these four components or points is represented by a working committee. Chairman of the four committees are Organization: Christian Rich Splawn, Promotions: co-chairs Nancy Tyndall and Barbara Impson, Design: Richard Winterrowd and Economic Restructuring: Link Cotham. Suggestions were made by Johnson as to how each committee could better carryout their work plans for 07-08. She also gave the committees ideas on items to add and items to delete.

The vision of the local program is stated “Downtown Ponca City is the HEART of the community! This destination district creates pride through the revitalization of its historic buildings and infrastructure; enhances economic prosperity through an environment of thriving retail, dining, and entertainment venues; and improves quality of life through special events, additional housing and guest lodging”.

Johnson also complemented the city on the new wayfinding signage to downtown from west HW 60. She said it was now much easier for visitors to negotiate their way into downtown from the west than it had been in the past. Johnson also noted the landscaping downtown was commendable and the Parks Dept should be congratulated once again for an excellent job on beautifying this area.
